Where do I start with Pilates ?

by Carol

I am an 81 yr old woman. I have osteoporosis. I have scoliosis , kyphosis , arthritis of lower lumbar spine . I see my chiropractor x 2 per month. I do not tolerate fosomax or other such drugs .

My kyphosis is worsening and I sense some loss of feeling in my right shoulder . Arthritis in my hands and feet plus my spine is worsening .

MY QUESTION FOR YOU
where do I start with Pilates ?

Hi Carol,

According to what you have written me I would not recommend taking a mat class. Look for a PMA certified Pilates Instructor in your area and interview several to make sure you find one who is familiar working with someone with your health history.

Go to their website here:

You should avoid flexion exercises where you bend the spine forward or excessively side to side.

Doing exercises that strengthen the mid and upper back will help to open the chest and ward off worsening of the kyphosis.

You can find some kyphosis exercises here.

Pilates for Arthritis joint pain here.

Exercise for Osteoporosis.

Pilates based exercises using gentle range of motion exercises with low weight and repetitions to start over 30 minutes or less of a supervised workout 3 times a week I would recommend to begin with.
