Scoliosis leading to Kyphosis

by Ned

I am 62, and swim and lift weights regularly.

Sciolosis runs in my family and mine has progressed to kyphosis. An MRI shows I have no fractures but I have lost several inches in the past 5 years. I have a 90 degree angle at my neck.

I am looking for therapy and exercises that will build back flexors, but not help muscles that pull me forward.

Thank you a lot for any help.

Hi Ned, That sounds like quite a severe angle for your neck.

I would recommend first to do more backstrokes in the water than working on your stomach. This can help to build more muscles in the upper and middle back rather than the pectorals that regular swimming would do.

Second, add any type of rowing or pulling instead of pushing exercises in the gym.

Take a look at these pages for more stretch and strengthening exercises:

This page will teach you some specifics about what works for Kyphosis, stretching and strengthening exercises.

This page will show you specific pulling exercises you can do at home or in the gym

I like the exercises on this page in particular to strengthen the upper back muscles and improve your posture.

Best to you!

Jennifer
