Exercise for Seniors

(Rita)

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for this informative and helpful site.

I am going to order your Pilates DVD.

My question is for my elderly Mom - age 75. What type of exercise do you recommend for seniors?

She has very bad arthritis, mainly in her hips and knees (no cartlidge left), is overweight, and generally sits too much because any exertion makes the pain flare up.

Thank you!

Rita

Jennifer's Response:

Hi Rita and thank you for your question and comments.

A majority of people I work with are seniors and 75 is probably the average age. I have very good success working with them 2-3 times per week for a half hour utilizing the Pilates reformer and wunda chair.

The spring tension on the Pilates equipment is very easy on the joints while strengthening and stretching tight, inflexible muscles.

If working individually with an equipment instructor is not an option the pool is also a very joint friendly place or working with stretch bands at home.

I assume she has a difficult time getting up and down from the floor so the dvd could be done lying in bed or on a firm elevated surface. Included are some standing exercises and she could do most of the others in a seated position as well.
