Effect of Pilates Reformer On Knees

I have a torn meniscus. Is using the Pilates Reformer okay for me?

Jennifer's Response:

Hi Margaret and thank you for your question. I have had a series of knee injuries myself including a torn ACL and meniscus. They were both repaired and the Reformer has really been a lifesaver for rehabbing my knees.

The Pilates Reformer is low stress on all the joints, particularly the knees due to its spring tension and low impact nature. This is the perfect way to strengthen weak muscles that help to support our joints!

Without having it repaired you may have some discomfort in excessive range of motion movements.

I have several client who have a torn meniscus without a repair and I just watch their alignment patterns between the feet and knees and hips closely while they are doing footwork on the bar. They have had no problems and are regaining strength and having less pain in the knee.

Enjoy the Reformer workout and avoid doing legs in straps until you develop more strength and stability in the knee joint.
