Back problems/knee problems HELP
by Jana
(NY)
Hi there, I have had five back surgeries and was starting to feel better. Then I was involved in a car accident and started to have back pain all over again.
I have problems and pain in both my knees for many years. I would like to lose weight and rebuild the muscles that were lost. I do take strong pain killers everyday and I'm not flexible at all anymore, especially after having a fusion, nor can I bend down or move my knees all that well.
I was wondering if pilates would be a good choice for me to try? I can't do anything that is intense or harsh on my joints.
Jennifer's Response:
Hi Jana and thank you for your question. Sorry to hear of all your back troubles, nothing like getting hit again when you're already down!
I think Pilates exercises would be a very good choice for your exercise as it is low impact and gentle on the joints while strengthening your core muscles that help to support the spine.
The newly revised Pilates Ebook that I have available here is a great way to get started.
It takes into account specific spinal conditions and then modifies the classic exercises so you can progress safely while still getting benefit from the exercises.
If you are not able to get on and off the floor you can do these exercises on a firm bed or padded table.
Another option is to find a qualified Pilates instructor in your area who has equipment for you to work on utilizing springs to make the exercises easier.
They can evaulate you individually and correct you as you are exercising.
